How to Apply a Full-lace Wig

Unlike a traditional wig, a full-lace wig looks as if the hair is growing out of the wearer's scalp. Individual hair strands, hand-tied to a lace cap, allow the hair to be free flowing, part in any direction, and be put in ponytails and updos. Full-lace wigs are good for people suffering from hair loss and those who want to change their appearance without stressing or damaging their hair.

Applying the wig properly makes it secure and allows the wearer to achieve a natural look. The wig can stay on for a week or so when applied correctly, and the user would only need to remove it to clean their scalp and natural hair.

Now Julia hair and beauty company offers you some methods about how to apply a full lace wig.

Supplies

Gather a few supplies to prepare the skin for the wig application: Cotton rounds, rubbing alcohol, and scalp protector.

Next, gather the supplies needed to apply the wig: Sharp scissors, a fine-toothed comb, a silk or satin headscarf, bobby pins, a wig cap or plus-sized knee high that matches the scalp's skin color, and two or more styles of lace wig adhesive. Trying a few adhesives allows the wearer to decide which adhesive works best for them.

Before applying wig adhesive, perform a skin test to ensure the user does not have a negative reaction to the adhesive chemicals. All good quality adhesives include instructions on how to perform a skin test. If a reaction occurs, choose a different adhesive and re-test.

Prepare the Skin and Existing Hair

A day or two before applying the wig, exfoliate the skin all around the hairline, then exfoliate every two weeks. This ensures the adhesive bond lasts longer.

Make sure the 100% virgin human hair and scalp are clean, as this helps the adhesive create a strong bond. A properly secured wig can stay on until the wearer removes it, though the wearer should remove it every seven to 10 days to clean his or her natural hair and scalp. Wrap the hair with a scarf or put it into cornrows, and then put on the wig cap or stocking. The existing hair should be flat and free of lumps. If the wig was custom-made, the wearer should do their hair the same way they did it for the wig measurements.

Use the make-up rounds and rubbing alcohol to thoroughly clean all the skin around the hairline, as dirt and skin oils prevent the wig adhesive from forming a strong bond. Next, apply scalp protector around the cleaned area and let it dry completely. The scalp protector helps protect the skin from the wig adhesive and decreases the chances of skin irritation.

Prepare the Full-lace Wig

Place the wig on the wearer's head and line up the sideburns with the natural hairline. Once the wearer decides where the hairline should be, use eyeliner to mark the area by putting small dots on the wearer's skin at the hairline of the wig. Next, place a bobby pin in the center of the front of the lace wig. This helps locate the proper placement when the wig is adhered to the skin.

Remove the wig and begin to cut away the excess lace from the cap. Either leave a quarter inch of lace around the edge or cut away the lace all the way to the beginning of the hairline, based on personal preference. Cut slowly and in small sections, and be sure not to cut off any hair.

Apply the Full-lace Wig

Apply tape or wig glue around the hairline. Wig glue should dry to the point that it is tacky before applying the wig.

Tie the lace wig into a ponytail or bun to keep stray hairs from falling into the adhesive. Starting with the front middle section, lay the lace in the adhesive. Work in small sections and move slowly. Once the entire wig is in the adhesive, begin to press the lace into the adhesive with a fine-tooth comb. If the placement needs to be adjusted, use rubbing alcohol to loosen the bond and make the adhesive tacky again. It may be necessary to apply more adhesive in some areas to make a secure bond.

Let the adhesive dry completely and wrap a scarf around the hairline to keep the bond tight. Wait at least 1 hour before styling the lace wig. The bond becomes more secure overnight; wearers should not swim, exercise, or wash the lace wig for at least 24 hours after application.
