Some Rules For Curly Hair

Curls are having a major moment, which is welcome news for those of us endowed with natural waves and spirals. I'm a huge fan of Malaysian deep curly hair—I tell my clients it makes them look gorgeous and sexy and wild. But curly hair is notoriously tough to manage and style—it tends to be dry, it's more prone to split ends and breakage, and it can easily end up an unruly mess. Follow these seven pro tips to keep your curls bouncing and behaving, rather than fried and frizzed.

Wash hair no more than twice a week.
The natural oils that coat your scalp don't make their way as easily down the hair shaft if your hair is curly, which is why curly hair is much more susceptible to dryness than stick-straight hair. When lathering up, use a gentle shampoo tailored to curly or damaged hair. In between shampoos, you can rinse hair with just conditioner from mid-length to ends only.
Lock in moisture; lock out frizz.
Once you've rinsed out the suds, comb through your curls and apply a moisturizing styling cream.
Deep condition your hair twice a month.
Most women with curly hair such as kinky curly Peruvian virgin hair don't do that, and it's essential—your hair is so prone to being dried out, it can get even frizzier. Apply an ultrarich product and leave in for at least 10 to 15 minutes (or overnight, for maximum effect).
Don't skip salon visits.
It's tempting to go longer between cuts, but it's better to get a trim about every 3 months to lop off those dried, damaged split ends. And how your hair is cut is equally important. Ideally, you don't want your stylist to take shears to your mane when it's damp: If it's wet, it's weighed down, and there's a tendency to cut too much off, so you risk ending up with a way shorter haircut than you wanted or just looking like a poodle.
Prepare your hair for sun and surf.
Sure, heat and humidity bring on frizz, but add sea water, sand, and wind, and you've got a recipe for tangles. To keep even the craziest curls from getting gnarled at the beach or pool, We recommend applying a leave-in conditioner and pin your hair back in loose braids.
Never use a fine-tooth comb.
Run one of those through your hair like Brazilian virgin curly hair with closure and you're just asking for breakage. Avoid hairbrushes, too, which can break up the curls, inviting frizz. When you need to detangle, choose a wide-tooth comb, or rake your fingers through your hair in a pinch.
Don't blow-dry without a diffuser.
Ideally, after washing, you'll apply leave-in conditioner or another styling treatment that's specific to curly or dry, damaged hair, comb it out, and let it air dry. That will minimize frizz and fly-aways and help curls keep their natural shape. Gently scrunch hair with your hands to encourage the curl. If you're pressed for time, blow-dry hair on a low setting using the diffuser attachment, which will help curls keep their shape and lower the frizz factor.
